Mona L. Martin,
RN, MPA
Executive Director
Mona Martin, RN, MPA, is a registered nurse, with a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Kentucky. Coming from a public health and community development background, she began her research career at the University of Washington in 1986. After spending 9 years in the area of research methods and instrument development for health promotion programs, she became one of the founding partners, and Director of Health Research Associates (HRA).

Through her previous work at the University of Washington and currently as Director of HRA, Mona has participated in patient-based outcomes research on an international basis, and has been a part of the development teams for a variety of published measures, including the I-QOL, SFB, SAIL, MS-QOL, IBSQOL, OWL-QOL, US version of the WHOQOL, the N-QOL, the BPH-PIM, new models of treatment satisfaction measures (for Migraine and Asthma), and the current effort to develop a WHOQOL version for older adults. She has directed several international studies, including the recent LIDO project (Longitudinal Investigation of Depression Outcomes), and has nearly 18 years experience in measurement development, validation, and cross-cultural adaptation.

Mona is a long-standing member of the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL), the International Society for Pharmacoeconomic Outcomes Research (ISPOR), the International Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), and the National Institute for Clinical Applied Behavioral Medicine (NACABM).


Donald M. Bushnell, MA
Associate Director
Data Management & Analysis
Donald Bushnell, MA, received his Masters of Arts Degree from the University of Washington (UW) in 1989. He began work in data management at UW in 1987, continuing as the data manager and analyst for the CDC-funded Northwest Prevention Effectiveness Center at the UW until 1996 when he took the position as the database manager at Providence Health Plans of Washington. He has been the director of data management and analysis at HRA, Inc. since 1998.

Don has supported scientific work on well-known measures such as the Incontinence-specific Quality of Life (I-QOL), the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL), the Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ), the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Quality of Life (IBS-QOL), the Obesity and Weight Loss QOL Measure (OWLQOL) and Migraine Treatment Satisfaction measure (MTS). Don has designed and supported the data management and analysis for a variety of large international studies including the Longitudinal Investigation of Depression Outcomes (LIDO). He has also conducted extensive research in the area of electronic data capture (EDC) on numerous different platforms.

He has authored and co-authored numerous quality of life publications and has both supported and presented a wide range of research findings. He is a member of the International Society for Quality of Life Research, the International Society for Pharmacoeconomic Outcomes Research as well as a peer reviewer for the journals Quality of Life Research, Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, and PharmacoEconomics.


Ismail Budhiarso, MA
Senior Research Manager
Ismail Budhiarso, MA holds a MA degree in Economics from University of Washington in Seattle. He joined HRA in 1997 as a Research Manager and has been working with a wide variety of quantitative analyses, including health economics (including willingness to pay and resource utilization), measurement psychometrics, treatment efficacy and literature reviews. He also participated as a member of the Economic Analysis Team in the Longitudinal Investigation of Depression Outcomes (LIDO), holding the responsibility for economic and statistical analysis of the cost of depression. He has supported a variety of data management and analytic needs for both off-line validation studies and secondary treatment of clinical trial data. He is a member of International Society of Quality of Life (ISOQOL) and International Society of Pharmacoeconomics (ISPOR).

Antonia Bennett
Research Scientist
Antonia Bennett, MA, is a PhD student in Health Services Research at the University of Washington. She is trained in outcomes assessment, statistical methods for categorical and longitudinal data, item response theory, and program evaluation. She has used data from LIDO (Longitudinal Investigation study of Depression Outcomes) to investigate the role of depressive symptoms in self-reported quality of life. Her previous projects include analysis of the Medicare part D benefit for seniors with chronic conditions, patterns of end-of-life decline in health measures, and the role of migration and social change in the spread of HIV/AIDS in China. She is a member of the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL) and the Academy Health.


Kelly McCarrier
Research Scientist
Kelly McCarrier, MPH, has a Masters in Public Health from the University of Arizona and is currently pursuing his PhD in Health Services Research at the University of Washington in Seattle.  He joined HRA as a Research Scientist in 2006.  Kelly's prior experience includes projects in the areas of health research, program evaluation, and public opinion research, performed with a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies.   Before coming to HRA, he served as an evaluation research fellow with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, where he worked on qualitative research projects in the area of tuberculosis prevention.  He is currently writing his doctoral dissertation examining patients' experiences with web-based self-care support programs for diabetes and other chronic illnesses.


Carla Ascoytia
Field Projects Manager
Carla Ascoytia, BA, received a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and French from the University of Northern Iowa with certification in Teaching. Carla joined the HRA team in 2003 and is the Manager for Field Projects with additional responsibilities as an instructor for the Life Skills patient education programs. In the last 3 years, Carla has coordinated and participated in a variety of qualitative and quantitative research studies involving in-depth individual interviews and focus groups across multiple population groups and therapeutic areas, including both male and female sexual disorders, mental health quality of life assessments, diabetes, COPD, asthma and SUI. Carla’s skills include site recruitment and monitoring, patient recruitment, cognitive debriefing and QA activities for outcomes research documentation. Her career prior to coming to HRA consisted of 20 years of service in the private sector with Continuous Process Improvement initiatives in Customer Service and Core Competency Training for corporate America. She is a member of IAHPC (International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care), NICABM (National Institute for Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine) and has certification and volunteer experience in Domestic Violence Crisis Management, and as a Hospice Care Provider.


Mary-Claire Miller
Research Project Coordinator
Mary-Claire Miller, MPH, ND received her Master of Public Health Degree from the University of California-Berkeley in 1992 and her Doctorate Degree in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University in 2000. Dr. Miller is a licensed primary care provider in the field of naturopathic medicine in Washington State. Her experience in naturopathic medicine includes nutritional health, botanical medicine, environmental medicine, environmental toxicology, pediatric and women’s health. Volunteer experience includes providing naturopathic healthcare to a homeless population and conducting home environmental assessments through the American Lung Association of Seattle. Mary-Claire joined the HRA team in January of 2005 as a field project coordinator. She has coordinated and participated in a variety of qualitative and quantitative research studies including both male and female sexual disorders, Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI), Overactive Bladder (OAB), diabetes, schizophrenia, and pediatric pulmonary disease , and has has experience with patient recruitment, qualitative activities and cognitive debriefing for outcomes research documentation. Currently, she also manages the marketing and enrollment for the Life Skills Patient Education Programs at HRA .


Patricia Gilman
Research Project Coordinator
Patricia Gilman, MA received her Master of Arts Degree from Humboldt State University (Arcata, CA) in 1994. She began her research career at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA as a research psychologist. While there she worked on an Interpersonal Violence project, and later on an STD/HIV project. She joined HRA in August 2002 as a research project coordinator and for the past 3 years, she has coordinated and participated in a variety of qualitative and quantitative research studies including both male and female sexual health disorders, diabetes, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). Patricia has also assisted the language department with the cross cultural adaptation and linguistic validation of outcomes measures into US English. She now has over three year’s experience working on US English translation projects in therapeutic areas such as Diabetes, Asthma, Bipolar, Neck Disability, Neuropathic Pain, and Over Active Bladder.


Augustus Baca
Field Projects Coordinator
Augustus Baca, BA  As a Field Project Coordinator, Gus is a new member to the HRA team.  He received a Bachelors Degree in Spanish from the California State University of Fullerton in 2003.  Prior to completing his degree, Augustus traveled extensively while serving in the U.S. NAVY and The Army National Guard.  He has worked as translator in a family therapist setting and has worked in a hospital setting dealing with patients with psychosis, manic depressions and  general  patient care. He volunteered at the University College of Los Angeles to conduct interviews with patients who suffer of aphasia, broca and dementia.  He has experience working directly with patients in an intensive management unit who are heavily medicated and require constant supervision.  He has volunteer experience  in recruitment  and  tutoring Spanish for educational systems, and is currently a member of AAEE (Associacion de Alumnos y Ex-alumnos de Espanol) . 


Clarice Wirkala
Project Coordinator
Clarice Wirkala, MA received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in International Studies and Anthropology, and her Master’s degree from Seattle University in Psychology. She is working towards a PhD in Developmental Psychology at Columbia University. Clarice was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, speaking Portuguese and Spanish. Clarice joined the HRA team in 2006, and worked as a Spanish consultant and translator for HRA for many years prior. Her multicultural and multilingual background allow her to adapt her work to diverse Hispanic and non-Hispanic populations in the United States. Clarice’s prior research experience includes work at the Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics at the University of Washington, and at the Institute for Human Development at Seattle University. Clarice has worked for many years as Spanish instructor at the elementary school and community college level. She has also worked as a community mental health counselor with homeless clients at the Downtown Emergency Services Center and at the King County Crisis Clinic, and as a psychotherapist with diverse and at-risk populations in Seattle. Clarice has worked and volunteered for non-profit organizations around the world, in countries including Mozambique, Ukraine, Argentina, Peru and Guatemala. She is currently based in New York City as a Project Coordinator for HRA studies. 


Andrew Bryant
Project Coordinator
Andrew Bryant, MPH has a background in international health, social work, and community-oriented public health research and practice. He holds Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and International Studies and a Master’s degree in Public Health (with a certificate in International Health) from the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine in Seattle. His public health research has focused on international health promotion and program evaluation, as well as mental health epidemiology and the psychosocial determinants of mental and physical health in the United States. Before joining HRA in 2006, Andrew worked as a research assistant for an international nonprofit health organization where he developed and evaluated maternal and newborn health promotion programs in East Timor. He has also worked in Guatemala, where he helped develop a GIS tracking system for a primary health care pilot program, and in Argentina, where he interned with the Buenos Aires Department of Social Services. He has work experience in the United States includes environmental research, Spanish instruction, social work with homeless adults. He is currently based in New York City as a Project Coordinator for HRA studies. 


Jane E. Goodman
Senior Project Manager
Jane Goodman received her Bachelors Degree from Ithaca College (Ithaca, NY) in 1975. She began her research career in 1989 at the University of Washington School of Public Health where she worked with the UW Center for Health Promotion in Older Adults. In 1992 Jane became the field studies supervisor for the CDC-funded Northwest Prevention Effectiveness Center, where she supported the data collection aspects for a number of outcomes research validation studies, including the original work on the US version of the WHOQOL. She left the University of Washington in 1995 to become a co-founder of HRA.

Jane currently specializes in the qualitative work and data collection process required for outcomes measurement development. She currently manages a satellite HRA office in Tennessee.


Virginia Ellis
Research Project Coordinator
Virginia Ellis is a qualified Counselor with specialist training in a number of psychotherapeutic areas including Adolescent Development, Childhood Abuse and Eating Disorders. She is an experienced Project Manager in social/behavioral science research, and has recently completed a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology Research at the University of Hertsfordshire in the UK. As part of the HRA Team, Virginia participates in qualitative research and coordinates a variety of patient data collection projects.


Valeska Kantzer
Language Department Manager
Valeska Kantzer was born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany and studied in the USA as an exchange student in 1995-1996. Before moving to the United States, Valeska worked for an international consultant firm as a Production Coordinator for presentation development. In 1999, she received her business degree, specializing in English/German translation. She moved to Seattle in 2001 and worked as a German translation consultant prior to joining the HRA translation team in March 2003. Since joining HRA, Valeska has supported and managed a wide variety of cross-cultural adaptation projects such as translations of questionnaires and general patient education materials for global studies. Additionally, Valeska has been trained to assist the HRA field staff with patient data collecting projects.


Adam Bailey
Senior Project Manager
Adam Bailey, BA graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Spanish from the University of Washington in 1999. Prior to finishing his studies, Adam lived and traveled throughout Latin America, served in Americorps teaching ESL at a Washington State Correction Center, and tutored Spanish and ESL at Centralia Community College. Since receiving his degree in 1999, Adam has been a part of the HRA language team. He is currently a Senior Project Manager, where his multi-lingual background and experience allow him to coordinate HRA's cross-cultural adaptation projects for a wide variety of health-related quality-of-life outcomes measures.


Gauri Shringarpure
Translation Project Coordinator
Gauri Shringarpure holds a Masters degree in Intercultural Communication and Linguistics from the University of Maryland and a Masters degree in German Language and Literature from the University of Pune, India. Her work experience lies mainly in the field of language. She has previously worked as a German language instructor, freelance writer, translator/interpreter and editor. She has also been tutoring for German, GRE prep and essay writing. Gauri is fluent in German, Hindi, English, Marathi, Gujarati, and has working knowledge of French, Spanish and Konkani. Her primary interests lie in creative writing, cryptic-crosswords & etymology and cross-cultural communication. She joined HRA in May 2006 as a Translation Project Coordinator. She is a member of NOTIS (Northwest Translators and Interpreters Society).


Dacia Christin
Translation Project Coordinator
Dacia Christin, MA, completed her graduate studies in German Language and Literature in 2005 at the University of Washington. Before her Masters, she also attended translation certificate courses. With a strong foundation in the sciences and Bachelor Degrees in German and Spanish, Dacia has worked for Health Research Associates as a Translation Project Coordinator periodically since 2002. Her experience living in Germany for extended amounts of time studying, teaching and working has given her a fine-tuned familiarity with cultural and linguistic differences necessary for detailed and culturally nuanced translations. In addition to teaching language at universities and private schools in both the US and in Germany, she has helped edit academic and political publications in English and German, studied and worked on a wide range of subject areas, and was involved with several interdisciplinary research projects relating to human rights. To further her knowledge and engagement in human rights she has worked and volunteered at non-profit organizations in the US, Mexico and Germany.


Ian Sherman
Translation Project Coordinator
Ian Sherman holds an MFA, completed in 2003, from the University of Washington; his graduate work focused in great part rhetorical techniques and English composition. Before moving to Seattle, he taught English as a Foreign Language in Moscow and Istanbul. Since having completed his graduate studies, he has worked as an instructor of English and Writing at the university and community-college level. His previous experience also includes foreign educational credential evaluation for American visa applicants and translation for a Moscow-based nonprofit organization focusing on HIV prevention. One of his primary emphases as Translation Project Coordinator for HRA is project management for languages in non-Latin alphabets and abjads, especially those utilizing Cyrillic.


Maria Madison
Translation Project Coordinator
Maria Madison was born and raised in Argentina. She graduated in English Education from the Instituto Nacional del Profesorado in Paraná (Universidad de Entre Ríos) with the highest honors, receiving an award from the Ministry of Education. Her Bachelor of Arts degree has been credited by the Foundation for International Services in Bothell, WA. She later went back to college specializing in Linguistics, Research Methodology and Literary Analysis at U.C.E.L University in Rosario, Argentina. For many years, Maria worked as a translator for international corporations such as ICI Argentina, ZENECA Pharmaceuticals, and SINOMETRICS International in Seattle, WA. She has also devoted many years to her career as an educator, teaching English as a Second Language in Argentina and in the United States. At the Universidad del Centro Educativo Latinoamericano in Rosario, Argentina, she was in charge of developing and teaching intensive Spanish courses to international students, including an executive of the High Commissioner for the United Nations. She moved to Seattle late in 2002, and has recently joined the staff at HRA, Inc. as a Translation Project Coordinator.


Monica Schertzinger
Translation Project Coordinator
Monica Schertzinger joined the HRA team in 2006 shortly following her graduation from the University of Washington, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics. Her particular areas of interest include theories of second language acquisition, semantic variation both within one particular language and in multi-language comparisons, the challenges of translation, and the study of Russian and Korean language. Monica’s experience of working with locals on service projects in three different countries in Central America, Eastern Europe, and Sub-Saharan Africa has challenged her to see the world through different cultural eyes and has given her a great appreciation for a variety of view points.


Sarah Youngblood
Translation Project Coordinator
Sarah Youngblood is a Seattle native and received her BA in Linguistics with a Spanish Minor from the University of Washington in 2006. Her academic concentrations have been in the areas of Sociolinguistic research design and implementation, especially into Northwest dialects of English; Spanish Phonology Acquisition and translation studies; as well as Hispanic cinema. She has participated in community service work throughout Mexico, and lived in Guadalajara, Jalisco during 2005. Sarah studied Hispanic Linguistics at the CEPE department of the Universidad de Guadalajara. She is a recent addition to the HRA team as a Translation Project Coordinator.

Carole Horner
Executive Secretary
Carole Horner holds the position of Executive Secretary to the Directors. Carole’s unique ability to organize and track many details have been invaluable in assisting with HRA projects, IRB communication, document preparation, and arranging project logistics on an international basis. Her background includes working at a large medical center, an engineering firm, and a biomedical research facility. Her skills and professionalism have been an asset to the HRA team since her arrival at HRA in November 2002.


Steve Daylong
Administrator
Steve Daylong joined the HRA team as Administrator in mid 2005.  Prior to joining HRA he held several different positions in administrative management the private sector and for educational organizations.  In addition to keeping the main offices of HRA running smoothly, Steve is currently pursuing an MBA in economics and finance. 


Ting Beng Li
Senior Project Manager
Ting Beng Li manages the Singapore-based division, Health Research Asia. This division was set up in 2000 to cater to the growing needs of Asian PRO linguistic validation work and literature reviews. Her focus is liaising and training the in-country and local consultants on language validations methodology, evaluating back translations, conducting cognitive debriefing interviews and lay panels for Asian projects. She also oversees HRAsia's network of over 50 in-country and local consultants in China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Prior to this, she has had more than 10 years of experience in managing projects relating to language translation, documents design and print management.


Christine-Clare Oh
Translation Project Coordinator
Christine joined Health Research Asia in June 2003. She has coordinated a wide variety of cross-cultural adaptation projects, evaluated back translations and conducted cognitive debriefing interviews. Her focus has been on coordinating cross-cultural projects for various Indian languages. She has more than 6 years of experience in management of translations projects, documents design and print management.
Chet Woon
Woon Chet Choon
Research Manager
Chet Choon holds a MBA (International Business) from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. Prior to joining HRA and Health Research Asia, he was senior consultant at Hewitt Associates, a leading international HR strategy consultancy, where he specialized in employee listening and employee satisfaction and attitudinal surveys. He is the architect of several successful web-based online survey instruments. Chet Choon is fluent in English and several Chinese dialects. He has participated in producing several literature reviews where his major role is in liaising with his extensive network of Asian physicians for the topical local input on global issues and conditions. Chet Choon is a member of International Society of Quality of Life (ISOQOL).
